The Art of Communication

Looking for an identity ?

What questions should I be asking myself when thinking about a corporate identity?
Answers to the following question will constitute a brief from which we will be able to design your companies identity and styling.

What does my company do?
Imaging you're in a lift and someone asks you "what does your company do?". Try to answer the following question in a paragraph, if you can't do it in two sentences!

I want my logo to represent?
Think key words: strength, resilience, quality, elegance, to name a few.

What sets your company apart from it's competitors?
If you can define your companies USP (Unique selling point) to us it can sometimes help us create a memorable identity that markets that USP to your customers. This maybe through a graphic or in the general styling we create. It could also be in a tagline/strapline that we may create for the company. (eg. "because you're worth it" "Never knowingly undersold" etc).
Can you also provide examples of your main competitors literature/website URL's for comparison.

Where will my logo be displayed?
Consider all the places you think that your logo will be used. Most are obvious... Stationery, website, leaflet, brochure etc. But some times there are other situations that we may need to be aware of. (eg. embossed out of metal on an engine for example. ...as a holograph on a credit card etc.) Tell us if your logo will be used in any unusual places. However, we will always design a logo that can be adapted for use with minimum changes in the following ways...
Conventional print, Two colour print, One colour print, Reversed out of a dark background, Internet/multimedia applications

What logos/literature do you like?
It is often extremely helpful to know what design styles and images YOU consider to be successful. Can you provide examples of printed material/URL's to websites you think work well - these do NOT have to be from your industry.

What colours should my logo be?
Some people are sure of the colours their logo should be. You may have an idea in mind or because a certain colour is relevant to their company/industry (eg. red if company name = red letter days, green-agricultural perhaps, blue/aqua - sailing.) Or if you want YOUR logo to be in YOUR favorite colour. (That's a valid reason as well!)

Should it include text, an image, or both?
Do you have any set views on what you want the logo to be? We will work within YOUR brief. YOU decide how much flexibility we have.

Should it have a special typeface?
Does YOUR industry use specific types of font. While it applies much less these days, certain typefaces can imply certain values. Serif fonts (like Times) suggest solid reliable, classic. These are often used by Banks & Solicitors for example.

Remember: the more information you can provide us with, the better you can be assured of having the identity that meets your exact needs.
